How to Tell Persian Rugs

For many who are into décor, having an authentic Persian rug is an essential aspect. It brings with it an aura of tradition as well as grandeur. Persian rugs are one of the oldest kinds available. Persian rugs are expensive and some people buy them as a means of investment. However, there are a number of fakes circulating in the industry and it is essential to know that you are picking the right one. You can determine this in several ways.

Instructions

    • 1

Find out if the carpet is handwoven or machine made. Authentic Persian carpets are handwoven. The process is quite long and often takes a significant amount of time to complete. Cotton threads are used in a pattern that moves from the top to the bottom part of the carpet. The upper portion is finished off in silk, wool or cotton and is done manually. Turn the carpet over and look at it. If you find that the design is visible on the back of the carpet, then the carpet is not handmade.

    • 2

Observe the motifs on the carpet. Persian rugs are largely comprised of floral prints. There are occasionally animals and birds. You will also find some geometric art in these carpets.

    • 3

Make sure your hand is dry and rub it vigorously on a rug that is advertised as being a Persian silk rug. Real silk will heat up a bit, whereas other fibers will not.

    • 4

Compare designs of Persian rugs. If there are two or more rugs with the exact same design, they are fakes.
