How to Decorate With Beach-Theme Rugs

A patterned rug is a good basis for planning a decorative theme for a room. With a beach-themed rug, you can find decorations and paint colors to match your rug and brighten up your room. It is important to use the colors and patterns on the rug when decorating a room to match it. By decorating your own beach-themed room, you can save money and brush up on your home decoration skills.

Instructions

Look for the main color in the rug and the accent colors. The rug may have a dark blue theme with accent colors of light blue or tan. Choose one of the more neutral accent colors, like the tan, and purchase wall paint the same color. Paint all the walls in the room with the accent color. If you want only one wall painted as an accent wall, it may be best to go with the main color in the rug--in the example, dark blue.

Acquire couch covers or a comforter set, depending on the room. If the rug is bright, you may want to get furniture covers or a comforter set that is all one color and doesn't take away from the rug. White is a common base color for beach themes. You may be able to find a comforter set with the same characteristics as the rug.

Pick out the main theme in the rug. Beach rugs often have old-fashioned cars, palm trees, waves, surfboards and seashells. Look for pictures and decorations with that same theme. Check the tag of the rug to see what company made it and look for more products from that company. Most likely they will have different beach-themed decorations with the same theme as your rug.

Put tall white lights in the room. Beach-themed rooms are usually bright, like the beach, and you can capture that look with white lights. Put some standing lights to accent places in the room like an accent wall, a large picture or a table lamp accenting the rug.

Find curtains for windows using the other accent color in the rug. If the rug's main color was dark blue, the accent colors were tan and light blue and you used tan for the walls, light blue would be a good choice for the window curtains. If the rug is more light-colored and bright, shorter curtains will work well. If the rug is full of darker colors, longer curtains would be better.

Decorate any appliances. If it is a kitchen, make sure all the appliances match an accent color in the rug, like black or tan. If necessary, paint tables or other furniture to match the rug.

Add the finishing touch by putting a bowl of beach-themed potpourri on a table or add beach wall decals.
