Latch Hook Rug Making Instructions

Decide where to start. You will decide based on how you like to do things. Starting in the center and working your way out keeps the bulk of your free canvas to the edges. Starting at the edge and working across or down works better for someone who prefers more structure and people who operate on a visual level may want to choose a large colorful area to begin the design. There is no wrong place to start, provided you keep track of the areas that still need stitches.

Use the color chart included in the kit to select the correct color of yarn for that block of canvas. Hold the latch hook in your dominant hand. Wrap the yarn around the shank of the hook, just below the latch. Try to keep the the ends even as it will give your finished project a more professional look. Hold the yarn in place with the index finger of your dominant hand.

Slide the hook through the square and back up through the square above it until the latch is on the top side of the canvas. The yarn will now be on one side of canvas thread and the hook on the opposite side.

Grasp the two ends of the yarn with the thumb and forefinger of your opposite hand. Make sure the latch is open. Place the yarn over the latch. The yarn will now be between the latch and the hook. Slide the hook back through the canvas slowly until the latch closes. Release your hold on the yarn and pull hook sharply the rest of the way through the canvas. The yarn is now knotted around the canvas. Pull both ends taut to create a tight knot.

Repeat process, changing the color of your yarn as you reach a new color pattern on the canvas.

Turn under the unfinished edges of your finished project and whip stitch to the underside of the rug with the needle and thread.
