How to Figure the Size for an Area Rug

Adding an area rug can really bring a room together. However, before purchasing an area rug, it is best to measure the area you want the rug to fill. Area rugs normally come in standard sizes of 3 feet by 5 feet, 5 feet by 8 feet, 8 feet by 10 feet, 9 feet by 12 feet and 10 feet by 15 feet. Whatever the measurement of the area, the rug will need to be one of the standard sizes.

Instructions

    • 1

Choose the area where you want to add the rug.

    • 2

Measure from one end of the area to the opposite end of the area. This is the length. For example, one side could measure 7 feet.

    • 3

Measure from one end of the area to the opposite end of the area from the sides that you did not measure in Step 1. This is the width. In the example, the side could measure 5 feet. In this case, you will have to go with a smaller size or bigger size since there is no exact match for your measurements.

    • 4

Find the standard size that closely matches your measurements. In the example, the measurements are 5 feet by 7 feet. The closest standard size is 5 feet by 8 feet.
