How to Clean a Large Area Rug

Large area rugs can link design elements in a room; however, stained or dirty rugs can detract from a room and make the entire room appear dingy. Most large area rugs do not have to be cleaned often. Cleaning a large area rug once a year can extend its life and prevent it from becoming overly soiled or dingy. Spot clean a large area rug as needed in between yearly cleanings.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove any furniture or other items from around the area rug. Roll the rug up, and vacuum the floor beneath the rug. Unroll the rug.

    • 2

Vacuum the top of the rug. Run the vacuum over the rug twice, then turn the rug over and vacuum the underside of the rug before turning the rug back over. Roll up the rug and carry it outside to a clean, flat surface like a driveway.

    • 3

Mix water and a few drops of liquid soap in a spray bottle.

    • 4

Spray the area rug until it is completely wet. Allow the soapy mixture to penetrate into the area rug.

    • 5

Brush the carpet with a laundry brush. Make sure to brush the carpet in the direction of its nap to prevent damage. Use firm, even brush strokes. Pay special attention to any extra soiled areas, but do not apply too much force. Remember to clean any decorative edging or tassels with the soapy mixture.

    • 6

Spray the cleaned carpet with a garden hose until all of the soap is gone and the water runs clear.

    • 7

Press the water out of the rug by using a squeegee, or pull it out of the rug using a wet/dry vacuum. Allow the rug to air-dry for several hours. Once the top of the drug feels dry, turn the rug over and allow the underside of the rug to dry.

    • 8

Roll up the cleaned area rug and return it to the inside of the house. Vacuum the cleaned area rug to renew the rug’s softness and pile depth.
