Clean the carpet by vacuuming and rubbing the surface with carpet shampoo. Before you can consider matching colors and dyeing the carpet back to its original color you have to make sure your carpet is in good condition. This will not only help the dyeing process, it will also allow you to see exactly what color you need to be looking for--you may be amazed at the difference in color when your carpet has just been cleaned.

Choose your color depending on the base color of your carpet. Because carpet dye is effectively transparent, you have to choose a dye that will complement your carpet's base color. For a complete table of what colors of dye can be applied to what colors of carpets, see the resources section of this article.

Purchase the carpet dye that is applicable to your carpet and that you think would be the closest match.

If the stain is near the wall you should place painters tape around the base of the wall. This will lessen the chance of you marking the wall when you apply your choice of carpet dye.

Use a pressure sprayer to spray the dye onto the carpet over the stained area. Do this in careful, gradual circular motions, taking great care to spread the dye evenly and not to saturate one area more than another.
