How Can I Dye a Blue Rug to Pink?

You don't have to live with a blue rug when you really want a pink one. A rug is usually one of the largest, and most expensive, items in your room, so it is worth the effort to remove the rug's existing color and dye it a new color. You will need a container large enough to hold the rug and allow it to move freely and an ample supply of hot water.

Things You'll Need

  • Scale
  • Color remover
  • Large steel or enamel container
  • Pink fabric dye
  • Detergent

Instructions

    • 1

Weight your rug to determine how much color remover and fabric dye you will need. The easiest way to do this is to stand on a scale while holding your rug, then subtract your weight from the reading on the scale.

    • 2

Mix the color remover with hot water (see manufacturer's instructions for the recommended ratio) in a steel or enamel container large enough to hold the rug and allow it to move around when it is stirred. You may use your washing machine if it is large enough. Some types of color remover require additional ingredients, and some require boiling the solution. Read the directions before you purchase the product.

Saturate the rug with hot water and place it in the color-removing solution. Stir the rug in the solution for the time recommended in the directions. Rinse the rug thoroughly in clear water.

Fill your container half full of hot water. The water should be between 140 and 180 degrees Fahrenheit. Mix 1 ounce of dye for each pound of fabric into the water. Add the fabric and allow it to remain in the dye bath for 30 minutes to an hour. Stir the dye bath frequently. These instructions are for the most commonly available dyes. Read and follow the instructions for your particular dye.

Rinse your rug in cool running water, then wash it with a mild detergent. Allow the rug to drip dry.
