Remove any debris from the carpet, such as nails or staples, per Buffalo's laws for trash collection. Dispose of the nails or staples in your household garbage bin.
Roll old carpet into a bundle. Each bundle cannot weigh more than 50 pounds or be longer than 4 feet. If you have old carpet that is 6 feet wide you must cut it before disposal to avoid a penalty of $52.50 (as of August 2010).
Tie the bundle with twine so the carpet does not come untied.
Place the bundle beside the curb on trash day, which varies by your Buffalo neighborhood. Buffalo allows all homes two bulk trash items per trash collection day, so you can dispose of two bundles or carpet at a time, or one bundle of carpet and one other bulk item (which includes yard waste, furniture and boxes with miscellaneous goods).
Contact WNY Professional Flooring to dispose of carpet by recycling. This company is the only Buffalo-area member of the Carpet America Reclamation Project. Arrange to drop old carpet off at WNY Professional Flooring's office. This allows you to dispose of old carpet at once, rather than waiting to put it out on the curb.
