Rugs Recommended for Hardwood Floors

Like other types of flooring, hardwood floors require regular maintenance to keep dust, dirt and debris from building up. One way to keep your hardwood floors clean is to place area rugs on the flooring especially at entranceways and other high-traffic areas. The rugs help to catch any debris before it lands on the flooring. The rugs also help in reducing scuff marks on your hardwood flooring.
  1. Vinyl Rug Padding

    • Area rugs with non-staining, vinyl rug pads are designed for use on hardwood floors. Vinyl rug padding will not discolor or damage your hardwood flooring, and it prevents slippage. Avoid foam back, plastic, latex or rubber padding rugs. Moisture can build up under these rugs and can damage your hardwood flooring.

    Polyurethane Padding

    • Area rugs containing polyurethane padding are also recommended for your hardwood floors. The rugs provide cushioning and insulation as well as a firm non-slip grip.

    Fiber Padding

    • Rugs containing fiber padding are durable but they don't provide as much cushion and insulation as polyurethane padding. Fiber padding contains recycled polyester fibers that allow your hardwood flooring to "breathe" or obtain air better through the padding.
