How to Make Dress Hats Using Flowers & Fabrics

Hats used to be a fashion staple for both men and women, as necessary for leaving the house as a pair of shoes. Take it upon yourself to fashion a dress hat that serves as an homage to the past. Creating your own dress hat out of fabric, flowers and an undecorated base hat is a simple way to give an ordinary hat new life. You not only have a vehicle for expressing your individuality, but a hat that is guaranteed to be unlike anything in department stores and boutiques.

Instructions

    • 1

Visit a hat supply store and pick out a basic, undecorated hat in any shape, color of style that you like. For example, select a pillbox hat or a cloche or a wide-brimmed sun hat. If you don't live near a hat supply store, visit an online shop like Awnol, Hatsupply or Greatcoinz.

    • 2

Measure the areas of the hat that you'd like to cover with fabric. You can cover the entire exterior of the hat or just portions of it. Cut out fabric to fit your dimensions.

    • 3

Apply hot glue from a hot-glue gun to the sections of that hat that you will cover in fabric. Spread the glue evenly around those areas with your paintbrush. Press pieces of fabric against those sections and allow the glue to dry, adhering the fabric to the base of the hat.

    • 4

Wrap a 2-inch-wide ribbon around the hat band. Adhere it with the hot-glue gun or simply tie it in a bow. Select the fake flowers you would like to use on the hat and cut any stems off. Position them on various areas of the hat: on the tip, around the band, near the brim or all of these places.

    • 5

Dab nickel-sized dots of hot glue on the designated areas where you want the fake flowers to rest. Press the bottoms of the flowers against the hot glue. Wait at least an hour before wearing the hat.
