Benefits of a Sheepskin Rug

Fleece has been used by humans since they first learned to raise sheep, and continues to be a popular material for clothing, shoes, bedding and floor coverings. Sheepskin rugs are valued for their warmth, comfort, durability and easy maintenance. There are several brands of synthetic imitations, called faux sheepskin, but they don't compare to the real article. According to UGG Australia, high-quality sheepskin is thick, soft and resilient, with both the fleece side and the skin side carefully prepared during production.
  1. Ease of Cleaning

    • Most types of carpet and rugs must be cleaned by professionals. Sheepskin rugs can be thrown in the washing machine or spot-cleaned with dry-cleaning fluid. A little combing with a wire brush is sufficient to raise the fibers once in a while in between cleanings. Fleece rugs also contain lanolin, which keeps the fibers naturally fresh and dirt-resistant, especially if it's hung outdoors in fresh air every few months.

    No Synthetics or Chemicals

    • Many carpets contain fairly high quantities of dyes, fire-retardants and sizing, not to mention the chemicals contained in rubber backing and padding that goes underneath the carpet. High-quality sheepskin is 100 percent natural to begin with and will only contain small amounts of chemicals used in tanning the skin on the back. It does not need a pad underneath because it is thick and soft on its own.

    Healthy for People and Pets

    • Sheepskin is a good alternative for people with severe allergies, provided they're not allergic to sheep, of course. It also has medical applications because it wicks moisture away from skin and regulates body temperature, both important factors in healing. The University of Vermont notes that Merino, Romney, Lincoln and Coopworth sheep are particularly bred for their wool. At home, a sheepskin rug made from one of these breeds makes an excellent bed for a pet, and a comfortable bacteria-resistant spot for cold feet. Additionally, sheepskin rugs won't shock you with static electricity in winter.
