How to Hang a Persian Rug

Persian rugs are luxury and style icons, thought of as rare and expensive indulgences, and even as investments. Rare antique Persian and oriental rugs are quite costly and difficult to find, but there are quality modern rugs available as well. Antique rugs especially are often displayed on walls rather than floors to best protect their value and show off their colors, patterns and construction.

Things You'll Need

  • Glass frame with acid-free backing, larger than the size of the rug
  • Plexiglas sheets larger than the size of the rug

  • Picture hanging hardware
  • Picture lighting hardware

Instructions

  1. Frame the Rug

    • 1

Lay the rug flat in the glass picture frame and close the clamping mechanisms on the back of the frame, using acid-free backing. This method works well for smaller rugs, especially very valuable and antique rugs.

    • 2

Install picture hanging hardware in a place on the wall that is not in direct sunlight and hang the framed rug.

    • 3

Install picture lighting hardware above the framed rug for illumination at night.

Sew Cloth Sleeves on the Rug's Back

    • 4

Carefully sew cloth curtain rod sleeves on the upper edge of the back of the rug, either all the way across in one long sleeve or at both ends and in the center.

    • 5

Insert the wooden dowel or curtain rod into the cloth sleeves.

    • 6

Install curtain rod holders on wall in a location out of direct sunlight and hang the rug by the rod.

    Use Plexiglas

    • 7

Place the Plexiglas sheets together, one on top of the other. Carefully drill a hole through both sheets in each corner, and two holes in the middle of the top edge.

    • 8

Place the rug in between the Plexiglas sheets.

    • 9

Insert the screws in each corner, putting the hex nut on the back and the decorative acorn nut in the front, and tighten them. Insert picture hanging wire in the middle holes for hanging the Plexiglas.

    • 10

Install picture hanging hardware on wall in a location out of direct sunlight and hang the framed rug.
