Instructions

    • 1

Lay your linoleum scrap on a cement surface with the back facing up. The back of the linoleum will be the top of your rug. Trace the size and shape of the rug you desire on the linoleum. Cut out the traced shape using a craft knife.

    • 2

Seal and prime the top surface and the cut edges of the rug using white latex acrylic paint. Allow the paint to dry and apply a second coat. The white primer will make the application of other paint colors bright and crisp. Note: Complete coverage with the layers of paint applications are important for sealing the linoleum, allowing your rug to last longer in various weather conditions.

    • 3

Paint a base color over the primer on the top and edges of the rug using latex acrylic paint. This color will be the background to your painted rug design. Apply a second coat if necessary.

    • 4

Trace your design on the surface of the rug. If stencils or stamps will be used, mark their placement.

    • 5

Paint the design using acrylic or acrylic latex paints. Use artist brushes, rollers, sponges, stamps and stencils to achieve the desired look. Outline painted designs using a paint pen if desired. Allow the paint to dry thoroughly.

    • 6

Seal the top and edges of the linoleum using clear polyurethane. Apply five coats, allowing each coat to dry completely before the next coat is applied.
