Traditional Geometric Rugs

Traditional geometric rugs weave fabrics into designs that display an exact measurement of lines, angles and curves. Basic colors and shapes can create a kaleidoscope of symmetrical patterns, while two colors against a backdrop of solid color can also be used to create simple geometric designs.
  1. History

    • Indian rugs were the first traditional rugs.

While India is credited for providing the longest line of traditional carpets and rugs, geometric designs are descended from Persia. There are tribal geometric rugs with various designs of stripes, squares, diamonds or other symmetrical shapes in the woven fabric.

    Machine-Made Geometric Rugs

    • Machines are able to replicate traditional geometric rugs.

Synthetic fibers that are colorfast and durable are used to duplicate many traditional geometric rugs. Machines can simulate designs much easier than hand crafting and are less expensive. The absence of all natural products, usually found in traditional options, is usually noted in machine made rugs.

    Transitional Geometric Rugs vs. Traditional

    • Transitional rugs offer more freedom of design than traditional styles.

Traditional rugs are not the same as transitional rugs; a transitional geometric rug can borrow designs from an original European or Oriental style. Original traditional geometric rugs will almost always have maroon, black, red, navy blue, brown, white and green as the colors, while transitional rugs can use any color or design available.
