Place the front legs of the chairs on the rug. If the rug is large enough, place all four legs on the rug, but avoid having more than 2 feet of empty rug behind the furniture. Place the rug and chairs in an area so that the people sitting have both feet on the rug.
Place coffee tables with all fours legs completely on the area rug. A common size area rug is 4 feet-by-6 feet or 6 feet-by-9 feet. Arrange a sofa with the front legs on the area rug. It is acceptable to have the back legs of the sofa on ceramic tile, wood flooring or wall-to-wall carpeting.
Place a dining table on an area rug that is 24 to 30 inches all around larger than the table itself. This will allow for easy movement in and out of the chair and moving to and from the table while keeping the chair legs on the rug. Any additional furniture, such as hutches and buffets, should not be placed on the area rug.
