Sisal Vs Polyester for Outdoor Rugs

When choosing between sisal and polyester for an outdoor rug, there are several factors to consider, such as durability, resistance to mold and mildew, and whether or not you prefer a natural fiber or a man-made one.
  1. Sisal

    • Sisal is a natural fiber, most often produced from the agave sisalana plant. The plant's leaves are removed, then dried and made into twine that is woven into rugs. Because sisal is a natural fiber, like other plant-based rug fibers, it can degrade in heat, sunlight, and when it gets wet. However, sisal is a very desirable and durable rug material when used indoors.

    Polyester

    • When compared with sisal, polyester is the better choice for an outdoor rug. Polyester is a petroleum-derived product, which makes it very durable and able to withstand elements such as heat, sun and rain. However, polyester is not the most popular choice among rug manufacturers and may be difficult to find.

    Polypropylene

    • While polyester is a good choice for an outdoor rug, most outdoor rugs are made from polypropylene, also called olefin. It is a petroleum-derived plastic product, is very strong, resists fading and dries quickly. It is highly resistant to moisture and mildew. When shopping for an outdoor rug, polypropylene rugs will most likely be easier to find than polyester.
