How to Decorate with Area Rugs

Area rugs come in a variety of shapes, sizes, colors and styles, each one a work of art unto itself. With such a wide array to choose from, you may be hard pressed to figure out how and where to place an area rug in your house for the most decorative impact. Both decorative and functional, rugs allow you to jazz up your living space while improving your home. When used correctly, area rugs can breathe new life into an otherwise drab space, turning your least favorite spot in the house into a cozy, warm zone of relaxation and style.

Instructions

Pick a style that appeals to you. If you prefer intricate patterns, consider Oriental or Persian rugs. Shag rugs and flokati rugs have high piles, making them ideal if you prefer fluffy area rugs. Braided rugs stand up to wear and tear and have a rustic-chic feel. Modern or contemporary rugs may combine elements of the other styles or appear wholly different.

Choose colors that complement your décor. Reds, oranges and yellows are considered "warm" colors and complement other colors in the same family. Blues, greens and some purples are considered "cool" colors and complement other cool tones. Neutral colors and earth tones work well with a variety of color schemes.

Invest in a rug you can care for. Some rugs can be cleaned at home. Others require specialty rug cleaners or a trip to a professional cleaner. Area rugs in high traffic spots will require more cleaning. Choose a rug accordingly.

Use size to your advantage. Area rugs can split a room into sections, allowing you to arrange your furniture in stations according to functions. Use a large area rug to demarcate a play area for children in your living room. Place a small area rug in front of your closet to indicate a changing area.

Place rugs to focus attention to a spot in the room. Place an area rug in a spot where no furniture is placed to create a focal point. A spot of color on an otherwise bare floor draws the eye to that spot. An example of this is placing a rug on an open space in front of a hearth or fireplace.

Hide imperfections with area rugs. Choose muted patterns and subdued tones for an area rug intended to cover parts of your floor you aren't proud of. Hide scuffs, mislaid tile or stains with a well-placed area rug.

Be creative. Rugs don't have to be rugs. Hang a patterned rug on the wall as art. Sew two smaller area rugs together and fill it with pillows for a floor cushion. Drape a rug over a bench or pew to add warmth and softness.
