Information on Polyester Carpet

The majority of the carpets in the U.S. contain synthetic fibers such as nylon, polypropylene and polyester. Polyester carpets are one of the least expensive types on the market and have a general lifespan of about five years. Manufacturers report several pros and cons associated with this type of carpet fiber.
  1. Benefits

    • Polyester carpet come in a wide variety of colors and shades, and are fairly fade resistant. They clean rather easily and have good stain-resistant qualities. Polyester carpets are also non-allergenic, shed moisture, and resist mold and mildew.

    Drawbacks

    • Polyester carpets are highly susceptible to "matting" or "crushing" and, therefore, are not very resilient. The polyester fibers bend under the weight of each footstep and do not spring back up or recover. Most warranties do not cover problems associated with crushing.

    Considerations

    • Consumers may want to look for polyester carpet that has high-density construction as opposed to low-density construction, which flattens out quickly. Carpet with a high twist level is also better than those with "blown" or loose yarns. Loose yarns unravel and take on a matted look.
