How to Make a Braided Scrap Fabric Rug

Hundreds of years ago, people did not always have access to stores in order to buy the items they needed for their homes. Frontier women, for example, would make household items like rugs using scraps of fabric left over from other sewing projects. Today, many people like to make braided rugs for the joy of crafting, to save money and to enjoy customized home decorations and accessories.

Instructions

    • 1

Cut your scrap fabric into rectangular strips that each measure 2 inches wide and 6 inches long.

    • 2

Place the strips in a line, end to end.

    • 3

Sew the ends of the strips together to make one long strip that measures 12 feet long. Repeat this process until you have three long strips.

    • 4

Knot the three strips together on one end.

    • 5

Braid together the three strips into one long braid.

    • 6

Curl the entire long braid into a flat spiral.

    • 7

Sew the braid together to secure the spiral, starting at the center of the spiral and working your way out toward the end.

    • 8

Cut off the excess thread before displaying your braided rug.
