How to Keep a Room Warm With an Area Rug

Hardwood and ceramic floors can be an elegant addition to a home, but when the weather turns colder, hard-surfaced floors can retain that cold, making a room unpleasant. A few area rugs, large and small, scattered around a room can retain a room's heat and go a long way toward warming up a cold, uninviting room.

Instructions

    • 1

Place an area rug over any drafty or cold area of your floor. These areas often include rooms over a garage or crawlspace, as well as basements or hardwood floors in older homes.

    • 2

Keep area rugs in places of high traffic or areas where you spend large amounts of time with your feet on the ground, especially with no shoes on. These areas may include in front of the kitchen sink, in front of the oven, in front of your couch, under the kitchen or dining room table and in any hallways.

Keep rugs in the bathroom. Bathroom floors are rarely carpeted, and for this reason are often some of the coldest rooms in a home. This is unfortunate, because this is a room where you spend more time without shoes or socks. Place a rug in front of the sink, bathtub and toilet to keep the chill off your feet. Rugs you place in the bathroom need to be washable.

Push area rugs in front of doors to block drafts. Let the edge of the rug turn up against the door frame to block the cold air coming in under the door. The rug will need to be moved before the door is opened.
