Persian Rug Cleaning & Repair

Persian rugs fall into the Oriental rug category, but are typically only made in Iran. Patterns of Persian rugs have names from the cities that created their own distinctive designs such as Debba, Gabbeh and Tabriz. The main characteristic that differentiates these rugs from other Oriental rugs is they have pile that consists of 160 knots per an inch. A consistent cleaning and repairing regimen can prolong the life of your rug and protect the value of the rug.

Instructions

    • 1

Press the fringes of the rug underneath with your hands to protect the delicate decorative material from being pulled by a vacuum. Vacuum both horizontally and vertically to get hard to remove dirt from underneath the knots.

    • 2

Flip the rug over and push the fibers back underneath the rug. Go over the back with the vacuum like you did the front of the rug. Lift the rug and hang over an outdoor fence. Beat the rug with a broom to remove dust. Vacuum the front and back of the rug to remove any remaining dirt.

    • 3

Mix 2 tbsp. of baby shampoo and 1 gallon of tepid water in a bucket. Dip a soft bush into the mixture and gently scrub the rug. Scrub the rug in both directions of the carpet fibers. Pour cool water over the rug to rinse.

    • 4

Squeegee the rug to remove the water. If you see soapy suds, continue to rinse with the water. Avoid leaving soap on the rug. Hang back on the fence to dry. Go over the rug with the vacuum to fluff up the rug fibers.

    • 5

Fix a tear in the rug by flipping it over and pressing a piece of duct tape the same color as the background on the back. Duct tape comes in a variety of colors, so you can bring a small snippet with you when choosing the best color.

    • 6

Press the duct tape hard to keep it from moving. Flip the rug back over and vacuum over the area to see if the duct tape will hold or if you need another piece.

    • 7

Trim any strings of fringe with scissors to prevent the rug from looking unkept.
