How to Lay Tape for an Oriental Rug

Double-sided carpet tape keeps rugs firmly in place when applied correctly, reducing the risk of slips and falls in the home. Oriental rugs, whether they're used under a dining table or as the centerpiece of a room, often bunch up under light foot traffic and need to be secured in place. Securing an oriental rug prevents tripping. Many rugs have a hard, threaded underside that carpet tape sticks to. A nonslip rug pad may be more suitable for small rugs or those that need frequent cleaning, since carpet tape is difficult to remove and leaves a sticky, messy residue.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the oriental rug. Write the dimensions down for later reference.

    • 2

Cut two pieces of tape that are 1 foot shorter than the length of the oriental rug. Cut two pieces of tape that are 1 foot shorter than the width of the oriental rug. If the rug is too small to reasonably subtract 1 foot from each end of the tape, cut the tape so that it will be 2 to 3 inches shorter than each side. Circular rugs require several 6-inch pieces of tape that will later be placed 6 inches apart, so cut accordingly.

    • 3

Clean the surface where the rug will lie. Vacuuming, sweeping and mopping are effective at removing most dirt and debris. If you are placing the oriental rug over carpet, steam clean the carpet and allow it to dry before proceeding.

    • 4

Lay the rug upside-down on the floor beside its intended place. Ensure that the rug is fully extended.

    • 5

Peel the backing from only one side of the first piece of tape. Place the adhesive on the first side of the rug, 6 inches from the end and both sides, pressing firmly to ensure it has adhered. Using the same measurements, stick the remaining three pieces of tape to the underside of the rug. If you are working with an irregularly shaped, small or circular rug, affix the tape near but not on the edges in 6-inch increments.

    • 6

Remove the backing from only one piece of tape so the adhesive is exposed.

    • 7

Lift the rug, flip it over and set it in place. Press firmly on the top of the rug to secure it to the floor.

    • 8

Smooth the rug into its proper place. Reach beneath the rug and pull the backing from the tape, smoothing it down as the backing is removed. Work slowly and continuously pull the rug straight before the adhesive touches the floor to ensure that it does not stick in a crooked position.

Step over the rug to the opposite side. Remove the backing and lay the rug using the same method. When three sides are in place, lift the final end of the rug and remove the tape backing.
