How to Dispose of Carpet

Over time carpeting collects a wealth of dirt, dust and other debris which can prompt a homeowner to replace it or switch to hardwood flooring. No matter the circumstances, your old carpet will need to disposed of in a responsible fashion. Although depositing a large roll of old carpet in a junkyard or an abandoned lot may seem like a quick hassle-free option, this is an unlawful environmental hazard which may result in legal consequences.

Instructions

Sell the carpet if it is in good, reusable condition. List the carpet, including all relevant details (dimensions, color, condition), in your local classifieds. State whether you are willing to deliver the carpet. To increase interest, you can list the carpet as free but require that it be picked up.

Donate your carpet to a charity of your choosing. Many organizations including Goodwill, The Salvation Army and Habitat for Humanity will accept used portions of carpeting and/or other floor covering materials if they are in fair condition. Most services will offer curbside pickup as well.

Contact a certified carpet recycling business. Companies like Carpet America Recovery Effort (CARE) will remove and recycle your carpeting for a minimal fee.

Recycle the carpet yourself. Portions of old carpeting can be used to cover the floors of vehicles, line the inside of pet houses or prevent the growth of weeds between rows in your garden. Carpeting can also be used as a soundproofing material for sheds and work garages.
