How to Select Rugs

Choosing area rugs that will enhance the look of your home requires juggling a number of criteria. Much like paint and furnishings, floor coverings will greatly affect the overall style and mood of a room, and the wrong rug can completely disrupt even the most stylish space. Knowing how to select rugs with the right things in mind just might save you from a design disaster.

Calculate the right rug size for the area by making a test "rug" with paper and painter's tape. Place four sheets of paper in locations on the floor that represent the four corners of a potential square or rectangular rug. Alternatively, you can cross lengths of tape that radiate out from the center of the space to the desired edge to determine the optimal size for a round or oval-shaped rug. After measuring your imaginary rug, adjust the paper or tape to define a larger or smaller area that is close to a standard rug size.

Decide what color rug will best enhance your décor. Since floor coverings contribute heavily to the overall perception of color in a room, choose a color that will accomplish your design goals. A rug in a hue that complements -- rather than matches -- your walls will become a focal point. Rich, darker colors create warmth and a cozier feel. Lighter colors generally give the illusion of more space.

Determine if a patterned rug will look appropriate. If most of the furniture and accents in your room are lacking pattern, a patterned rug can add visual interest. Mixing patterns can also create a cohesive look as long as the patterns have something in common, such as color or size and type of pattern. Patterned rugs also do double-duty by camouflaging dirt and stains, so these types of rugs are a natural choice under dining tables and in high-traffic areas.

Coordinate the style of your area rug selection with your home's décor. A bold, color-blocked design will look out of place in a traditional home, as will a Colonial-styled rug in a sleek, modern home. While there is certainly flexibility when it comes to creating a tasteful fusion of styles, it is still important that rugs convey the same overall style as the rest of the room.

Consider how important texture and material is to you. Rugs made from synthetic fibers such as nylon and polyester are extremely easy to maintain and very inexpensive. Rugs made from natural fibers such as wool and silk will be more expensive but more durable. Take into account how the rug will feel as you walk or lie down on it.
