Characteristics of Needle Felt Carpet

Fiber-bonded, or needle felt carpeting, is produced from individual colored fibers. Despite its name, needle felt carpet doesn't feature any real needles. Instead it is made from barbed needles that entangle the individual fibers to bond them together. Needle felt carpets have been around for some 30 years and are generally more durable than other varieties.
  1. Carpet Details

    • Needle felt carpet is a durable type of carpet, compared to the two other main types of carpeting, woven and tufted. It's made by the electrostatic attraction of individual synthetic fibers, which are bonded to create an entire carpet. This carpet type is also described as a more modern style of carpeting based on its advanced manufacturing process and fancy styling. The carpeting is available in almost any shape and size.

    Where It's Found

    • Because of its durability, needle felt carpeting is often found in areas of high foot traffic such as hotels, restaurants, resorts and schools. It can also be found in individual residences as a way to add personality to any room. Because it can be purchased in almost any shape and size, needle felt carpeting can be custom ordered to give a modern and luxurious look, no matter what the application.

    How It's Made

    • Needle felt carpets are made from advanced techniques, which involves compressing nylon, polypropylene or continuous filament fibers with individual barbed needles. In the manufacturing process, fibers are compressed onto textiles and other materials, such as foam and heavy coating. A binding agent is then applied so that the fibers can attach to the backing more durably. The backing is designed to enhance carpet durability and give it extra protection. The binding agent is also designed to be long-lasting through chemical and thermal treatments either prior to or following application.

    Cost/Maintenance

    • Needle felt carpeting is comparable in price and durability to Berber carpeting. According to the website Carpet Installation Cost, in 2010 the average price per square foot for this type of carpeting was $2.25. This is a more cost-effective option than Berber ($7.50 per square foot) and woven carpeting styles, which can cost up to $43 per square yard. What's more, needle felt carpet is easy to maintain. Grime is not visible and the carpet looks fresh after every cleaning.
