How to Use Multiple Area Rugs in One Room

Area rugs do more than just cover a floor. They solve many decorating problems in a simple and inexpensive way. It isn't just large rooms that can use multiple area rugs; small rooms benefit from utilizing these decorating tools as well. They correct space organization problems and bring visual excitement to an area. Additionally, area rugs come in a variety of sizes and shapes, making finding the right rugs for a room very simple.

Use your area rugs to mark off different areas of a room. This becomes particularly important when you have one room that serves several different functions like a loft space. In this case, often the living room, dining room, kitchen and bedroom all exist in the same open space. Area rugs can give each spot its own personality. To use them in this way, center the major furniture pieces like the couch and chair for the room around the area rug. Do this for all the spaces you'd like to create.

Bring a burst of color into the room with multiple area rugs. It's useful to employ this technique if you've opted to decorate your space in a mostly neutral color palette. Area rugs allow you to introduce your accent colors into the room without overpowering the room with an excess of color.

Introduce texture into a space that lacks it. Many modern styles utilize clean lines and often lack texture --- this is particularly true of many industrial styles of decorating. Area rugs allow you to bring spots of texture into the room, which creates visual interest but doesn't upset the overall effect. If you'd like to employ this technique in your space, try throwing a woven rag or oriental rug on a smooth wood or linoleum floor.

Create diversity in your decorating with multiple area rugs. If you've gravitated toward an eclectic style of decorating, area rugs provide you with a simple way to bring some diversity to the look. Try mixing up the different rugs by choosing rugs made of different materials, featuring different colors, shapes and styles. For example, look for wool, woven rag and cotton rugs for your space, and be sure to look for interesting shapes and colors as well.

Tie a room's decor together using rugs. One way to do this is to buy rugs that all have the color scheme of the room in them. For example, if your decorating colors are golden yellow and burgundy, buy one rug of each color and then an additional rug with both. Place these in areas near the entryway, in front of the fireplace or in a reading corner.
