How to Know the Value of Oriental Rugs

Oriental rugs are carpets that originate from Asia. These rugs typically come from China and Vietnam, but currently can be made in neighboring or nearby countries such as Iran, India, Cyprus and Turkey. Oriental rugs that are from Iran are commonly referred to as Persian rugs because the country known as Iran was once called Persia. Oriental rugs are largely considered to be valuable collectibles.

Instructions

    • 1

Visit an oriental rug merchant with the actual rug. The merchant will consider several components, which are the knot density (how many knots and the space between each), dyes and colors used, country of origin, age, condition, composition materials, design elements and the rug's availability and demand. Ask for a written estimate of the value of the rug.

    • 2

Use an online estimator. There are rug merchants and traders that put valuation estimators on their websites. Input the relevant components that the estimator requires to get an estimate of your Oriental rug's worth. Most will use the same markers that a merchant would consider.

    • 3

Take the Oriental rug to an appraiser or antiques dealer. Another option is to physically take your Oriental rug to an experienced collectibles appraiser or antiquities dealer if a bona-fide rug expert is not available in your area. Have the appraiser or dealer examine the rug to give you an approximate value.

Look up approximate values of your Oriental rug in library books. Visit your local library and check out books that detail and describe how to estimate Oriental rug values. Some books will instruct you how to score the various markers to find the rug's worth.
