How to Keep a Throw Rug From Bunching Up

Throw rugs serve a dual purpose in the home by adding to the appearance of a room as well as protecting the floor from dirt, scuff marks and scratches. But when your throw rug keeps bunching up on the floor, it also serves as a health hazard because it's easily tripped over. Securing a throw rug to the floor so it doesn't bunch up in between cleaning can ease your frustrations, make the room look neater and prevent anyone from getting hurt.

A measuring tape helps you determine the size of your throw rug.

Measure your throw rug using a measuring tape. Find the measurement of one side and one end so you know the dimensions of your throw rug. This helps you find a rug pad that fits beneath your throw rug.

Dampen a clean cloth with plain water. Wipe down the surface of the floor where your throw rug will go. Clean up dirt, stains and debris, then dry it with another clean cloth for a better surface for the nonslip rug pad.

Lay the rug pad on the floor in the exact spot where you want your throw rug. Place the throw rug on top of the rug pad, making sure the rug pad is lying flat. Smooth out the throw rug, and check to make sure it covers the rug pad completely.
