How to Paint Existing Carpet

When carpeting becomes worn or stained, it can cause the room to look disheveled and unkempt. Using a stencil to paint shapes directly onto the carpet will allow you to transform the unsightly existing carpet into a fresh-looking, decorative rug. Painting onto existing carpet using latex paint and vellum stencils can save you a lot of money, allowing you to make your home look professionally decorated without breaking your pocketbook.

Instructions

    • 1

Place a vellum stencil onto the carpet and tape it down with painting tape.

    • 2

Dip a sponge brush into latex paint so that the top half is saturated.

    • 3

Pat the sponge brush over the stencil, filling the area completely. Allow the paint to dry completely, which can take up to two hours.

    • 4

Peel up the tape and lift off the vellum stencil to reveal the painted stencil on the carpet. Repeat this process to paint as much as you desire onto the carpeting.
