How to Make a Tater & Onion Box

Potatoes and onions both should be stored in a cool, dark and ventilated area of your home. A cabinet or box made of wood with a lid will keep your potatoes and onions in the dark, but you should place the cabinet in a cool, ventilated area. If you use or store a lot of onions and potatoes, make a tater and onion wood storage box to keep them fresher longer.

Instructions

Use your band saw to cut a piece of peg board to 12 7/8 inches by 20 inches to make the back panel of your box. Cut two side panels from your 1 inch by 10 inch piece of pine to 21 3/8 inches by 8 7/8 inches each, then cut the back at 1/4 inch by 5/8 inch so that you can attach the back panel. Cut another piece from your 1 inch by 10 inch piece of pine for the bottom panel to 7 1/4 inches by 11 1/2 inches. Now, take your 3/4 inch by 12 inch piece of pine and cut out a piece that is 11 1/2 inches by 16 inches to use for your front panel.

    • 2

Lay out all of the pieces on a flat surface. Use your clamps to fit all of the pieces together with the front of the box face down on a flat surface.

    • 3

Measure 20 inches down the side of the box and mark inside of the box to know where to place your bottom panel. Place the bottom panel in this marked spot and use your keg screws and drill to attach the bottom panel to the sides of the box. Attach the bottom panel to the front panel using your drill and screws.

    • 4

Use your drill and wood screws to attach the front panel to the box's sides. Fill in the holes with the wood plugs. Attach the back panel to the sides using your hammer and brad nails.

    • 5

Crosscut two 14 1/2 inch pieces from the 1 inch board and set your table saw to 10 degrees. Cut one of these pieces to 8 5/8 inches and the other to 3 inches. Place the 3-inch piece on top of your box and attach it using two wood screws. Place wood plugs into the holes.

    • 6

Place the hinges onto the lid of the box and attach them will a drill using the screws that came with them. Now, attach your lid and hinges to the top of your box.

Sand the entire box smooth, ensuring that all of the plugs you placed in the screw holes are flush. Use your wood filler to fill in any cracks or holes. Sand over the area after the filler has dried. Apply a coat of stain over the entire box and allow to dry.
