How to Estimate Wool for Braided Rugs

A braided rug handmade from wool can add a cozy element to any bare floor, be it hardwood, carpeted or tiled. The technique of braiding wool is not complicated, and even a novice can learn the process and turn out an attractive braided rug without much effort. As you plan your project and choose your colors, one of the first tasks involves estimating the amount of wool you will need to make the rug you desire.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the area you wish to cover with the braided rug. Use the tape measure to determine the length and width of the floor space and write the dimensions down on a piece of paper.

    • 2

Multiply the length dimension by the width dimension to determine the area of the rug. For example, if the length of the rug is 5 feet and the width of the rug is 4 feet, multiply five by four to arrive at 20 square feet.

    • 3

Figure 2/3-pound of wool for every square foot of rug you are making. Using the same example, multiply 20 by .66 to arrive at 13.2 pounds of wool.

    • 4

Round the wool weight up to the nearest whole pound to ensure you have enough wool to complete your project.
