Carpet Shopping Tips

The right carpet can make a room. Beyond complementing your color scheme, the right carpet can provide a comfortable surface for lounging on the floor, determine the use of a room or completely change the atmosphere of a space. You should take all of these factors into account when shopping for carpet and carefully consider the multiple uses it might have before deciding on the perfect carpet for your home.
  1. Colors

    • The color of your carpet is as important as the color of your walls and has the same impact as you walk into a room. Of course, you should strive to find a color that complements the existing or intended color of your walls, but stay away from choosing a matching color. Having too many surfaces with the same color can make the room feel dull and monochromatic, while a complementary color will highlight both colors in the room. Also consider the carpet color in itself, keeping in mind that dark colors will tend to make a room feel smaller and more intimate while bright colors create the impression of more light and space. Finally, do not forget that you will have to clean the carpet, so depending on how the room will be used, select a color that can stand up to the staining and wear that might occur in the room.

    Materials and Weaves

    • Choose the right materials and textures for the intended area. While plush carpeting can be appropriate for spaces designed for floor activities such as those in children's playrooms, it can be quite inconvenient for heavily used areas such as hallways or dining rooms. Consider how you intend to use the room and decide on an appropriate carpet thickness that will complement rather than interfere with the planned activity.

    Finishings

    • Most carpets provide some level of stain resistance, but if you are planning to carpet an area where movement, children or pets are likely to generate stains or heavy wear, consider purchasing a carpet with added stain resistance or protection. Soil resistance keeps dirt from accumulating in your carpet and is also a desirable feature for homes with a lot of dust or in heavily trafficked areas. Lastly, anti-static protection is desirable for cool and dry climates.

    Installation

    • Often overlooked, installation is an important part of good carpeting. The right amount of cushion will not only make your carpet more pleasant and comfortable, but also add years of life by preventing trampling and compression. Proper installation should also guarantee that your carpet is well attached to the floor, preventing lifting in the middle or swinging edges that can fray. While professional installation may be expensive, if you do not feel you can adequately install a carpet, it may save you time and money in the long run because your carpet will last longer and will be easier to maintain.
