How Can I Put a Rug on Carpet?

Layering textures on top of one can create a warm and welcoming environment if done properly. Choose rugs that coordinate with decor and current carpet to avoid a strong clash of color or patterns. Oversized rooms such as dining areas, living areas and bedrooms can accommodate larger, bolder prints. Smaller rooms such as foyers and playrooms may need something that will brighten the room to make it seem larger. Prior to making the final purchase, take time to feel each rug to make sure it fits your standards of comfort and softness.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the room or area of carpet you want to place the rug over. Rugs come in a variety of sizes to accommodate different areas.

    • 2

Purchase a rug pad to place between the carpet and the rug. The pad should be slightly smaller than the size of the rug because the pad should not show under the rug. This will help the rug remain in one place and protect the carpet from the underpinning of the rug.

    • 3

Remove furniture from the room and vacuum completely. Lay the rug pad down in the area you want the carpet to lay over.

    • 4

Lay the rug over the pad and adjust accordingly. Once the rug is in place, bring the furniture back in to the room. Vacuum the rug to remove any stray fibers that may have popped up from moving.
