Do-It-Yourself: Hanging Rug Tapestries

Framed Hanging

  Hang a small, lightweight rug tapestry like a picture, in a frame with glass. Sandwich it between two sheets of glass, or place it on a board backing and cover it with a sheet of glass.

  If you're using a board backing, select a complementary-colored paper for behind the tapestry.

  If you're using sandwiched glass, attach picture-frame hooks behind the top of the frame.

  Insert nails at a slight angle into the wall in the desired location to hang the tapestry.

Tabbed Hanging

  Cut a strip of medium-weight fabric 3 inches wide and 2 inches longer than the top of the tapestry. Turn the outer edges in and hem the top and bottom of the fabric on a sewing machine.

  Cut several strips of fabric for tabs. Hem the sides of the tabs and sew them to top edge of the long fabric strip at even intervals. The heavier the rug, the more tabs it will require.

  Hand-stitch the long fabric strip to the top back of the tapestry rug, leaving room for a dowel.

  Insert the dowel into the pocket.

  Hang the tapestry rug on a curtain rod in the desired location.

Hook-and-Eye Hanging

  Cut a strip of medium-weight fabric 2 inches longer than the top of your tapestry rug and 3 inches wide. Turn the ends in and machine-hem along top and bottom of the fabric strip.

  Sew a piece of hook-and-eye tape along the outside of the strip of fabric. Hand-stitch the fabric to the top back of the tapestry.

  Cut a piece of 1x3 piece of lumber to the width of the tapestry. Staple the other side of the hook-and-eye tape to the piece of lumber.

  Screw or nail the wood in the desired location on the wall. For a heavy tapestry, screw into the wall studs.

  Attach rug to the wall by fitting together both sides of the hook-and-eye tape.
