Carpet Remnant Ideas

Don't throw out those leftover pieces of carpet when you are finished recarpeting your home. Carpet remnants, purchased from a store or left over from your own carpeting project, can be put to good use in many areas of your home.
  1. Area Rugs

    • Use carpet remnants to create distinctive area rugs throughout your home. Cut the piece of carpet to the size you want and finish the edges with twill tape or canvas or have them serged. Create an odd-shaped area rug to fit around a potted plant or a floor lamp. Create a one-of-a-kind design by sewing together squares of carpet in different patterns. A large remnant can be used to cover an entire room.

    Crafts and Decorating

    • Frame a favorite photo with a piece of carpet. Cut it to fit around the picture. Stabilize the carpet frame with craft sticks or a piece of wood glued to the back of the carpet. You can even frame the piece of carpet itself for a distinctive wall design. Don't cover the carpet with glass or plastic because the overlay will crush the fibers.

    Soundproofing

    • A piece of carpet placed under a noisy refrigerator, washing machine or other household appliance can help muffle annoying humming sounds. If you live in an apartment, the tenants downstairs will appreciate your efforts. Use carpet to line the walls of a home theater to soundproof the room. Or put a piece of carpet under the dining room table and chairs so the chairs don't scrape across the floor.

    Pets

    • A leftover piece of carpet makes a comfy and cozy dog bed. Line the floor of your outdoor doghouse with a carpet remnant to keep your pet warm and dry in the winter. Meanwhile, a cat condo can get extra padding with a layer of soft carpet inside. Securely nail a piece of rough carpet to the wall for the cat to use as a scratching post.
