Bathroom Rug Ideas

At its essence, a bathroom rug is utilitarian. It soaks up drips when you get out of the shower or tub, helping your floor stay dry and keeping it from becoming slippery. A bathroom rug is also a soft, warm place to land your feet, as opposed to the cold, hard tile of many bathroom floors. You have many choices when it comes to bathroom rugs, from basic to decorative.
  1. Traditional Bath Rugs

    • Traditional bath rugs can be solid-colored or patterned, short or shaggy. They are absorbent and often have either a nonslip backing or are reversible. Some are cotton, some are made of man-made fibers. Traditional bath rugs are usually fairly small and made to fit a small space just outside of a bathtub or shower. You can easily find traditional bath rugs in a wide variety of colors and sizes at many home stores.

    Novelty Bath Rugs

    • If you're in the mood for something fun and funky, or outfitting a child's bathroom, look for a novelty rug. Novelty rugs are available in many shapes and designs, from rubber ducks to frogs to fire trucks, and are often part of a themed collection, allowing you to purchase matching towels, shower curtains and accessories. Other novelty bath rug choices include faux fur, holiday motifs and sports team logos.

    Oriental Rugs

    • While wool, silk or antique oriental rugs are not a good choice for a high-humidity, water-soaked bathroom, a small synthetic oriental rug can work well. Oriental rugs are beautiful and colorful, and add an unexpected, sophisticated touch to a luxurious master bath, guest bath or powder room.

    Rag Rugs

    • Rag rugs are made from torn strips of of fabric that are knotted, braided or woven together. Rag rugs are a good choice for the bathroom because they are often quite thick and made of cotton, which is highly absorbent. They are inexpensive, reversible, and you can feel good about the fact that the cast-off fabrics used to make your rug did not end up in a landfill. Although rag rugs have a country-casual vibe, they can be quite beautiful and add charm and warmth to your bathroom.

    Indoor/Outdoor Rugs

    • Indoor-outdoor rugs are not especially soft or absorbent, but a smaller one will do in a pinch. Indoor-outdoor rugs are inexpensive, hold up well to moisture, resist mold, and come in a variety of designs and colors. A doormat size works well just outside a shower or small bathtub.
