How to Take Bubbles Out of a Rug

Area rugs serve to protect hardwood floors or delicate patches of carpet from heavy foot traffic. They also provide colorful flair which helps complement a home's interior decor. While installing and caring for a rug may seem straightforward, problems such as air pockets, wrinkling or warping can misshape it over time. Bubbles can form if the rug is exposed to moisture or trapped beneath heavy furniture for a long period of time.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove all furniture from the top of the rug.

    • 2

Run a hot bath and hang your rug over the shower rod or a towel rack. Close the doors and windows in your bathroom and let the steam flatten the bubbles for 20 to 30 minutes.

    • 3

Place the rug outside on a warm, sunny day. Allow it to be exposed to direct sunlight for two to four hours, or until the rug is flat and dry.

    • 4

Carry the rug back inside and turn it upside down. Place long strips of carpet tape on the edges of the carpet and one strip in the middle.

    • 5

Flip the carpet over and place it into position. Walk over the entirety of the rug to create a lasting bond between the tape and the underlying floor.
