How to Make a Room-Sized Rug

Shopping for a rug can be time consuming and disappointing. Most manufacturers only sell their designs in standard, popular sizes and shapes. If you need a larger or smaller rug than what is offered in the stores, or your room is an unusual shape, you may feel forced to give up the idea of having a rug that covers your entire floor. Before you throw in the towel, consider creating your own rug from wall-to-wall carpeting. Most carpet can be cut exactly to your size specifications and may cost less than a pre-made piece, anyhow.

Instructions

Choose a type and color of carpet from a home improvement or specialty carpeting store. Purchase a piece of the carpet the same size as your room. Unlike ready-made rugs, wall-to-wall carpeting is available to fit a floor of any size or shape.

Whipstitch the outer edges of the carpet with reinforced thread to bind it. Alternately, use ready-made peel-and-stick binding or binding tape to finish the edges of the carpet.

Move all of the furniture out of your room. Lay your finished area rug and make sure you are happy with the size and appearance. Return all of your furniture to the room and arrange it on top of your custom rug.
