Nylon Vs. Polyester Rugs

Nylon and polyester are just two of many different fibers used in carpeting and rugs. Each type has its own pros and cons, but choosing between these particular two requires an understanding of the differences between each and determining which fiber will best hold up to the homeowner's lifestyle.
  1. Identification: Polyester

    • Polyester is a term that can refer to a multitude of different synthetic fibers, but most commonly refers to polyethylene terephthalate. Basically, polyester fibers are petroleum-based products spun into fiber threads for use in textiles, including carpets and rugs. Today, it is becoming increasingly common to make polyester using melted-down recycled plastic bottles. The polyester fibers are then used in a number of products, including carpeting, drapery, wall coverings, hoses, sails, fiberfill and clothing.

    Identification: Nylon

    • Nylon is currently the most commonly used man-made fiber in carpeting and rugs. It first came about in the late 1930s. It is made from a number of chemicals, including chemicals that have been extracted from water, petroleum, natural gas, coal, air and agricultural by-products. This synthetic polymer is spun to resemble silk or into a coarser texture for use in carpets. Nylon is considered to be the most wear-resistant carpeting available currently. Like polyester, nylon can also be made using recycled petroleum-based plastics and is used in a variety of textiles.

Pros and Cons of Polyester Rugs

    • Polyester is more naturally stain resistant in comparison to nylon. It is also more affordable in comparison to nylon-fiber rugs. Unlike nylon rugs, polyester rugs can become matted and may not spring back into their original shape after heavy use. Wear will be evident in high-traffic areas. Polyester carpeting also sheds continuously. In areas with high heat, polyester fibers can melt, resulting in an unsightly appearance.

Pros and Cons of Nylon Rugs

    • Nylon-fiber rugs are extremely easy to dye, so there are a plethora of rugs in various designs, colors and styles available to match every home decor. Thanks to their durability, these carpets often do not show their age and are generally replaced to update style rather than to replace a worn rug. Unfortunately, nylon fibers are more easily stained than polyester unless the nylon fibers have been treated using chemicals that aid in stain resistance. Though they are easily dirtied, they are also relatively easy to clean. Nylon carpets are also more expensive than polyester rugs.
