How to Paint a Sisal Doormat

Sisal is a tough, easily maintained natural fiber that is used in many applications where a natural look is desired. The fiber comes from the leaves of cactus plants that are grown in Africa and Central and South America. The fibers are woven together to make ropes, twine and even rugs. The natural fibers soak up paint well, and you can create a unique sisal doormat with just a few supplies. Judging the amount of paint your doormat will need takes some experience. It is best to practice on a discarded piece of sisal to learn how well it absorbs your paint.

Instructions

    • 1

Mark your pattern on the mat with masking tape securely attached along the edges of the design. Any loose tape may allow bleeding underneath. Tape any stencil to the mat with the stencil interior edges as flat as you can make them.

    • 2

Paint your pattern on the sisal with outdoor latex paint. Sisal quickly absorbs the paint, so layer it on somewhat thickly and work it into the spaces between the fibers.

    • 3

Let the paint dry completely before adding a second coat of paint. Add an area that touches another painted area only after the first area has completely dried. Otherwise the paints will run together. Tape the painted area well to ensure the second paint does not leak under.

Allow the rug to dry for 12 hours before using it.
