How to Lengthen a Chair Rug

Finding the perfect sized chair rug may be difficult when working with an odd size or without measurements. If you have found the right rug but discover through use that it is not as large as it needs to be, there is a solution. Extending the rug size is easy to accomplish with a few simple tools and without any knowledge of cutting or binding rugs. Combining the original rug with a similar rug or purchasing two of the original rug and attaching them together should make the rug functional in no time.

Instructions

    • 1

Purchase the same or similar rug. The rug should be the same rug or type of rug (for example, woven, tufted or fabric) so that the edges meet cleanly and easily. The rugs will need to match in length on at least one side or end where they connect. For instance, a 4-foot by 6-foot rug will not work with a 3-foot by 5-foot rug.

    • 2

Place both rugs face down on a hard surface floor with the rug backing facing up. Do not place the rugs on another rug or carpet. The softer surface could cause the rugs to buckle or bunch during the attachment process.

    • 3

Butt the two rugs together along the side or edge where they will attach. Push them together until the edges meet.

    • 4

Cut two small lengths of duct tape, and place the tape across each end of the taped seam. The smaller pieces should be about 3 to 4 inches long. Place the shorter tape perpendicular to the seam, on top of the ends of the seam's tape and along the edges of the rug. The idea is to use the smaller lengths of tape to prevent the ends of the seam's tape from peeling up and becoming damaged and loose over time.

    • 5

Press the tape in place over the seam. Move your hands across the tape, and press gently but firmly to make it adhere to the rug backing.

    • 6

Turn the attached rugs face up, and place them with the rug backing against the hard surface of the floor. Gently walk over the seam using your weight to adhere the tape to the rugs' backing.

    • 7

Put the rug into place under your chair. Adjust the placement so that the attached rug does not show if you do not want it to.
