How to Hang a Heavy Rug With a Sewn Canvas on the Back

Hang a beautiful or valuable heavy rug on the wall to preserve its pattern and eliminate wear. Rug professionals attach heavy fabric loops or sleeves to a rug's canvas backing before hanging it. You can get the same results by making your own from strips of fabric, hemming them and stitching them in place. Slide the hanging rod through the fabric carriers you've made and your lovely rug has just become an elegant wall hanging.

Instructions

  1. Sleeve

    • 1

Measure the length and width of your rug using the measuring tape. Purchase a heavy curtain rod and brackets. Alternatively, buy a dowel rod and heavy cup hooks with wall anchors. Paint or finish the dowel before you hang the rug. The rod or dowel needs to be at least 3 inches longer than the width of the rug.

    • 2

Install the brackets or a row of cup hooks 1 inch away from the position of the rug's top edge when it's hung . Place them high enough on the wall to keep your carpet's bottom edge from hanging on the floor beneath it. The fringe or edge will be damaged if it is walked on or gets eaten by the vacuum cleaner.

    • 3

Use the scissors to cut a strip of strong cotton fabric such as canvas one inch longer than the width of the rug. Make the strip 1 1/4 inches wider than the rod or dowel so you can slip the hanger through easily once it's stitched to the backing canvas. Use the strong thread to make a 1/2-inch hem on all edges of the cloth strip. Slip-stitch the hemmed strip to the top edge of the rug's canvas backing.

Slide the curtain rod or dowel through the sleeve and hang it from the brackets or wall-anchored cup hooks.

Determine the height and width of the rug using the measuring tape as if you were going to hang your rug from a sleeve. Install the brackets or wall-anchored cup hooks in the same positions as well.

    • 6

Use the scissors to cut several strips of heavy cotton fabric long enough to make loops through which the rod or dowel will be slipped. Decide how wide you want the loops to be. There are no hard and fast rules regarding width. Hem each of them on all four sides using the heavy thread and the needle.

Slip-stitch one loop to each of the rug's upper corners. Add more loops to the backing canvas, working from the outer corners toward the middle. Slip the rod or dowel through the loops and hang the rug from the brackets or cup hooks.
