How to Keep a Remnant From Fraying

Area rugs give a room a cozy feel and can add extra color to the room. However, they are expensive. You can cut down on the cost by buying a remnant from a carpet company. After they carpet a person's home, the leftover carpet is called a remnant and is sold at a deep discount. The remnant will be unfinished and will fray over time unless it is treated properly. Fortunately, it is inexpensive to bind the edges of the carpet yourself.

Things You'll Need

  • Heavy-duty scissors or shears
  • Burlap tape
  • Hot glue gun

Instructions

    • 1

Turn the carpet remnant upside-down. Examine the edges for any areas that are already beginning to fray. If you find any, trim the frayed section with the scissors or shears.

    • 2

Spread hot glue on one edge of the remnant. Press the edge of the width of the burlap tape onto the hot glue. There should be some burlap tape hanging off the edge of the remnant.

    • 3

Repeat step 2 with each edge of the bottom of the remnant.

    • 4

Turn the carpet remnant over. Apply hot glue to one edge of the top of the remnant. Fold the burlap tape up from the bottom, wrapping it around the edge of the remnant. Press it into the hot glue.

    • 5

Repeat step 4 with each edge of the top of the remnant.
