You can make an attractive floorcloth rug even if you aren't an artist. Craft stores and even some home and garden centers carry a selection of stencils that can turn out a professional-looking design. If you aren't sure of the design you want, look through interior design magazines for some ideas. Your design could be on a piece of fabric, an existing floor, a square of tile or a painting. Any fine art store stocks the materials you'll need for the project.

1
Shrink the canvas by running it through the washer and dryer. Fold the canvas 1 inch under around the perimeter for hemming. Iron the 1 inch hem in place and miter the corners. Sew the hem in place either by hand or on a sewing machine.

2
Prime the canvas with white gesso. After the gesso dries, paint the base coat on the canvas and let it dry.

3
Draw your design lightly in free hand or with stencils. After you lay down the design, paint it with the colors you chose. Let the paint dry completely.

Apply four to five layers of water-based sealant and let it dry.
