How to Make a Thick Bath Rug

Cold tile floors are uncomfortable on bare feet at any time, especially when getting out of the tub or shower. Pamper your toes with a thick bath rug to match your bathroom color scheme. Modern cotton-blend yarns combine the absorbency of cotton fibers with the softness and light weight of acrylics. A rug made from a cotton blend has extra-long fibers for a thick and shaggy texture your feet will enjoy.

Instructions

    • 1

Cut a piece of rug backing fabric that measures about 18-by-24 inches. You can adjust the size of the rug larger or smaller, depending on the size of your bathroom, but keep it rectangular or square for the easiest construction.

    • 2

Tear off a piece of tape the length of one side of the rug. Wrap the tape around the edge of the fabric, with one half of the tape on the front side of the backing and the other half of the tape on the back. Squeeze the tape tightly to ensure it adheres to the entire length of the fabric. Repeat this for the other three sides of the fabric.

    • 3

Cut strands of yarn that measure 7 inches long. The number of yarn strands you need will depend on the size of your desired rug. Begin with 200 strands and cut more when needed.

    • 4

Push the tip of a size H crochet hook through the first hole in the bottom row of the backing. Push the hook back up through the second hole in the row so that the hook is now on top again.

    • 5

Double one strand of yarn. Pull the loop from the middle of the strand through the rug backing by grabbing it with the crochet hook. Pull the yarn until the loop and loose strands are about the same length. Remove the crochet hook and set it aside. Slip the two end strands through the loop and pull them gently. The loop will shorten, tightening around the strands and knotting the yarn in place.

    • 6

Push the hook down through the third hole in the backing and up through the fourth. Knot another strand of yarn onto this spot the same way as the first.

    • 7

Continue knotting strands of yarn onto the rug backing until you have completed the entire bottom row. Smooth the strands of yarn down away from the center of the rug. Attach strands of yarn to the second and subsequent rows until the entire surface of the rug backing is covered in long strands of yarn.

Remove the masking tape from the edges of the rug backing fabric. Thread a yarn needle with an 18-inch strand. Fold one edge of the rug underneath, folding right at the point where the loops and strands start. Stitch the edge of the fabric to the underside of the rug, sewing through both layers of backing fabric. Sew the other three edges down in the same manner.
