How to Make a Rug Out of Torn Fabric

Before you throw out those old towels or T-shirts, consider recycling them to create a custom rug that will certainly be one-of-a-kind. By gathering a few, basic supplies, you can give a second life to towels that are destined for the garbage heap by making a shaggy, rag rug from strips of torn fabric. A rug made of torn towels is a cozy addition to any bathroom and will provide a soft, absorbent resting place for those fresh-from-the-bath feet.

Instructions

    • 1

Cut the fabric into 1/2-inch strips

    • 2

Cut each strip into individual pieces that are at least 2 inches long. If a longer shag is desired, cut the strips into longer pieces.

    • 3

Decide which side of the rug canvas will be the top of your rug.

    • 4

Thread one end of a fabric strip through a hole in the rug canvas.

    • 5

Thread the other end of this fabric strip through a hole that is next to the first hole. Both ends of the fabric should now be on the “top” side of the rug canvas.

    • 6

Tie the ends together into a knot.

    • 7

Tie a second strip of fabric to the rug canvas in a hole that is immediately adjacent to the first strip.

    • 8

Continue attaching strips of fabric this way until the rug canvas is completely full of fabric knots.
