How to Anchor a Runner to a Wood Floor

Runners make great wood floor coverings for hallways, along kitchen counters, and in front of sliding closet doors. A runner adds cushion and warmth to a hard and cold wood floor in such locations, but it often moves out of place. Unless you anchor a fabric runner to the floor, it creates a slip hazard in the home. Some runners come with non-slip rubber or vinyl backing. There are simple remedies for keeping an unbacked wood floor runner in place.

Instructions

  1. Anchor a Runner With a Mat

    • 1

Clean the wood floor thoroughly by sweeping and damp mopping.

    • 2

Lay a tacky anti-slip mat over the floor where the runner goes. Use more than one mat if necessary to cover the floor space under the runner.

    • 3

Place the fabric runner over the mat or mats on the floor. The runner will not slip on the mat, and the mat will stay in place on the wood floor.

Anchor a Runner With Rug Pads

    • 4

Sweep and mop the floor where the runner will cover it.

    • 5

Flip the wood floor runner over with the underside facing up. Peel the backing off rug pads to expose the adhesive.

    • 6

Place one rug pad every two feet along the center of the runner. Put pads within two to four inches from both ends. Lay the adhesive sides on the runner and press the pads firmly into the fabric.

    • 7

Flip the fabric runner over with the rug pads facing down. Stretch the runner out as you lay it over the wood floor.
