How to Calculate How Much It Costs to Put Carpet In

Carpeting changes the entire look and feel of the room. It changes a hard, cold room into a comfortable place to relax and walk around barefoot. But it is also an expensive home project — especially when you hire an installer. You’ll save some money by doing it on your own. Figure out just how much your savings will be before you get started on this common do-it-yourself project.

Instructions

Visit your local carpeting store or browse online for carpeting options. Determine the type of carpet you want to install. Get a quote per square foot for both the carpet and padding together.

Measure the length and width of the room in feet. Then multiply the length times width to get the square footage of the area you want to carpet. For instance, a 12 by 14 foot room has a square footage of 168 feet. Play it safe and add about 4 to 16 extra square feet to the figure to ensure that you have enough around the edges. The result here is about 184 square feet.

Multiply the square footage by the price per square foot of the carpet plus padding.
