How to Make a Stair Rug

If you have stairs in your house that are constructed out of wood or vinyl, then you know how slippery the stairs can be when you walk down them wearing socks or slippers. One way to avoid potential accidents on your stairs is to use stair rugs, which will provide more traction. Although you can buy stair rugs from a department store, they can be costly. This is especially true if you have a lot of stairs to cover. One solution is to make stair rugs yourself using inexpensive materials.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

    • 1

Cut pieces of wool fabric into strips measuring approximately 4 inches wide and 24 inches long.

    • 2

Sew the ends of the wool strips together using wool thread to create three long strips that each measure 72 inches long.

    • 3

Pin the three long wool strips together at one end using a safety pin.

    • 4

Braid the three wool strips together, and then pin the other end of the wool braid using a safety pin.

    • 5

Wind the wool braid into a 12-inch wide oval coil, and then pin the coil together along the seams using safety pins.

    • 6

Sew the oval coil together along the seams using wool thread. Tuck the end of the braid underneath the coiled rug, and then knot the thread on the bottom of the rug. Trim off any excess thread with scissors. Remove the safety pins.

    • 7

Cover one side of the wool rug with a thin layer of fabric glue.

    • 8

Cut a piece of nonslip backing the same size as the stair rug, and then press the backing onto the glue-covered rug. Allow the glue to dry for 30 minutes, then place the rug onto one of your stairs with the backing side down.

Repeat to make as many stair rugs as you require.
