How to Keep a Carpet From Curling on Its Ends

Unless maintained properly, the ends of rugs and carpets may curl, appearing unsightly and causing tripping hazards. The fibers of carpets left rolled for long periods conform to the shape, resulting in curled edges when the carpet is spread out flat. Keep the carpet edges from curling to preserve your carpet’s appearance and reduce chances of accidents.

Instructions

  1. Sticky Rug Gripper Method

    • 1

Sweep or vacuum the floor where you will spread the carpet to remove accumulated dust and dirt. Flip the carpet so its lower surface faces upward and sweep this side to remove dust and loose threads. Snip off damaged or loose threads with scissors.

    • 2

Measure the length and width of the carpet edges and cut sticky rug gripper strips to size. Remove the backing tape from a strip and spread it over the edge of the carpet. Repeat the process for the other edges. Overlap the corners of the strips of tape.

    • 3

Press the strips down so they adhere to the carpet fibers. Flip the carpet back and spread it over the desired area. Walk over its edges so the adhesive from the gripper strips secures the otherwise curling ends to the floor, making them lie straight.

    Ironing Method

    • 4

Mist the curled end of the carpet with water from a spray bottle. Avoid drenching the carpet but spray it lightly.

    • 5

Spread a white cloth over the moist end of the carpet. Set the iron on the medium-high heat setting and glide it over the cloth and carpet, pressing the curled end firmly so it lies flat.

    • 6

Flip the carpet to its other side and mist it lightly. Spread the white cloth over this side and repeat the process of ironing the carpet end.

    • 7

Remove the cloth and check the end for signs of curling; mist and iron each side of the curled end again if necessary. Repeat the procedure on the opposite end of the carpet before spreading it on the floor. Smooth out the ends with your hands so they lie flat on the floor.
